Nick on Breakbeat:
"I've been addicted to electronic music for more
years than I can possibly remember. Not
just a particular strain mind you, but ALL of it - ranging
from the funkiest deep house to the harder, faster and techier
d&b and almost everything in between. I think as a result
of this, I found it quite difficult to settle into a groove
when it came to writing and composing.
Five years ago, I remember
first hearing Tsunami One's Hip
Hop Phenomenon, and just
being completely blown away
by that track. There was something there that for me transcended
everything I'd ever heard before; there were cool electronic
noises, chopped up vocals and deep basslines
that I appreciated and was accustomed to. But underpinning
it
were
these intoxicating
beats, dominating the lower frequencies but moving and syncopating
in a way that I hadn't really heard before. When it came
to the breakdown, my jaw just dropped - this fucker was huge!
I went out the following day and bought up the entire Marine
Parade back catalogue, and even though those tracks didn't
quite match up to the sheer quality of HHP (you can't touch
a collaboration between BT and Freeland in
my opinion) a seed was definitely planted. I guess you could
say that that
one put my musical life on track, and led me to start Fullmono
in the first place!
I think to this day, breaks is the only underground
dance style that has survived commercial homogenisation;
apart from from the odd Orange phone ad (which was class
btw), you very rarely hear breaks tunes outside of the underground.
It's remained true to it's roots, which kind of
appeals
to me."
