10/05/2006; iPods - Scratch Magnets

This pisses me off bigtime. I've had three of these things in the past five years, and no matter how much money I spend on protective cases, the bloody things still get scratched to buggery.

Take for example my recent purchased, top of the line 60GB video model. Resplendent in all it's baddass black and chrome glory, I didn't want to wait too long this time before I got a case for it, hoping to avoid the usual "initiation" of light scratching and blemishing that occurs before I finally getting off my fat backside to buy one. I was given a fantastic Tunewear iPod wallet as an early Christmas present and it's been sitting snugly and protected in it's luxurious soft-leather folding wallet ever since. Earlier today i decided to get it out to show a friend, all ostentatious and ready to evangelize my zealous affinity for Apple gear. I slip it out of it's cushiony surroundings, only to find the thing looks like it's been dragged along the street behind the back of a no.46 bus - it's covered in bloody scratches! How could this happen? I can only assume that some dust has gotten under the protective clear plastic protecting the click-wheel and screen, but to suffer that amount of surface damage? I"m not sure whether to blame the case construction or Jonathan Ive's form-over-function industrial design but it seems as though short leaving it in the box there's nothing anyone can do about preventing their (initially) highly coveted digital music player from looking like trash after only a few months.
